Careful
This one came from realizing how good I can be at shielding myself from blessings. Wayfare, a publication of the Faith Matters Foundation published the poem “Careful” online: Wayfare Magazine. I was invited to a reading at a Wayfare gathering in Atherton after the publication. The photo of the sandpiper (I think it’s a Willet) that accompanies this poem in the The Gift of Broken Things was taken on the California coast near Half Moon Bay.
Careful
“I will
pour out my spirit,”
He says,
and we hoist our umbrellas
against the torrent,
eyes cast down,
intent upon
our trudging steps,
careful
to miss any moisture
that might penetrate
our thick souls.
